Vulgaris: derived from Latin, meaning common, or something that is derived from the masses of common people. Origin of the adjective ā€œvulgarā€, from Latin vulgaris, from vulgus ā€˜common peopleā€™. The original senses were ā€˜used in ordinary calculationsā€™ and ā€˜in ordinary use, used by the peopleā€™ . Vulgaris is the species name of many plants that were used by common people, in their every day lives

Our Makers

Over the years of working with plants we have met some truly incredible herbalists and makers. Our shop features the remedies made by women from all over the U.S.. Our products are carefully selected and curated with a focus on quality, transparency, effectiveness and nourishment. We feature gentle remedies made in the Wise Woman Tradition, with local, accessible plants. We strive to host a diverse set of makers and celebrate the wide web and spectrum of medicine making.

We feature the botanical and nature art of local artists to the lower Hudson Valley, honoring their individual style, unique relationship with the landscape and our local ecosystem. Our seasonal items celebrate the cycles of nature, and the rich and complex variety of creative expression.

When you visit our store you will find each maker and artistā€™s story, biography and intention next to their medicine area. We will work you to select the remedies and herbs that fit your needs. We offer short consultations to ensure we create a safe space for conversation and guidance.

Our Founder

Hi! Iā€™m Alexandra, about 8 years ago I started a little herbal education business called Mindful Wilderness. Through the years I have always dreamed of creating a space to host the remedies of the incredible women makers I have met along the way. These are trusted collaborators, partners and friends and I hope you find as much joy, nourishment and wisdom in their remedies as I have!

I began my herbalism journey 10 years ago, inspired by my grandmother and the wise women in my Romanian heritage. For the last 8 years I have been teaching workshops on herbal medicine, nature connection and wilderness skills. I offer workshops at my home, and now of course at Vulgaris Herbs, local organizations and farms in the lower Hudson Valley with the intention to create and support our connection to local communities and plants.

I work with herbs in ways that encourage us to:

  • Engage with the synergies of the whole plant and its constituents

  • Make gentle, nourishing remedies that uniquely support each individual

  • Create a purposeful and responsible relationship with plants that fosters curiosity, kindness and simplicity

  • Build confidence and competence for the at-home herbalist; empowering each student to bring herbalism into their home through hands-on experience

  • Keep herbalism accessible to everyone

Happy Makings!
